A Unit Standard (US) is a registered statement of desired education and training outcomes and its associated assessment criteria together with administrative and other information as specified in the regulations.
Unit Standards are comparable to modules at university.
Fundamental Unit Standards and Unit Standards with General Applicability are those that can be utilised as part of many different qualifications, usually as Fundamentals. They mostly have to do with communication, literacy, numeracy, health / safety, HIV / AIDs, generic management, project management, administration and information technology.
According to the education and training quality assurance body (ETQA) The standard in the NQF system is held in the Unit Standard. A Unit Standard is the smallest unit that can be credited to a learner. Unit Standards can stand alone, but are generally part of a Qualification. A cluster of Unit Standards, including fundamental learning, core learning and elective learning, form a full Qualification.
